Introduction

The Wireless Charging Alliance (WPC Alliance) is a collaborative organization composed of multiple independent companies, and the Qi standard is an international standard established by WPC for compatible wireless charging stations. Mobile phones, cameras, remote controls, and all electronic products with the qi logo will be compatible with all charging docks with the logo printed on them

In the current commercial mobile wireless charging field, the WPC Alliance's Qi standard has an absolute advantage. As of August, 628 companies worldwide have joined Qi membership, including internationally renowned companies such as Apple, Samsung, LG, Haier, etc.

The "qi" logo belongs to the WPC Alliance. To use this logo on wireless charging products, authorization from the WPC is required. Unauthorized use is considered infringement and may result in punishment from the WPC or product removal. In addition, after being certified by Qi, all indicators of wireless charging products meet the requirements of Qi standards, which is also a guarantee of the quality of the product itself. Consumers using products certified by Qi are obviously safer and more reliable than those that have not passed.

To apply for Qi certification for a product, the company first needs to register as a WPC member and pay membership fees. Members include small business members, regular members, fully qualified members, and founding members. Different members pay different membership fees and receive different rights

After applying to become a WPC member and paying the annual fee, the company can apply for authorization to use the "qi" logo. The corresponding documents of the company can be sent to the qi headquarters, and after approval, authorization can be obtained.

At the same time as obtaining authorization, 5 functional prototypes (using wireless charging solutions that can be certified by Qi, such as NXP, Xuxinsheng, Lingyang, Yichong, etc.) can be prepared and sent to the designated domestic certification laboratory of WPC, such as Anzheng SGS、 Prudential and others, and then the solution company and customer fill in the corresponding product model, WPC membership name, and certification type. Certified products are divided into two types based on load power: BPP (Baseline Power Profile) and EPP (Extended Power Profile). BPP covers products with output power less than or equal to 5W, while EPP includes products with output power greater than 5W up to 30W. Afterwards, the testing fee will be paid. The BPP certification fee for domestic certification laboratories is generally between 25000 and 30000 RMB, while the EPP certification fee is around 150000 RMB.

QI testing content

1. Compliance testing

ATL (Authorized Test Lab) is a compliance testing laboratory that currently has multiple options in China. At least 5 prototypes will be sent for testing, and one of them will be arranged for compliance testing first. After passing the testing, the compliance test samples will be kept in ATL. The main testing contents include:

A、 Timing of communication protocol between transmitter and receiver;

B、 Test the power output capability through the translation of the XYZ axis;

C、 The maximum supply capacity of energy transmission;

D、 Foreign Object Detection (FOD)

2. Compatibility testing

There are only two IOC (Interoperability Test Center) compatibility testing laboratories in the world, namely Belgium in Europe and South Korea in Asia.

After passing the compliance test, ATL will divide the other four prototypes into two groups and send them to laboratories in Belgium and South Korea for compatibility testing projects. Two samples will be left in the main IOC laboratory, and the other two will be left in the auxiliary IOC laboratory. After the compatibility testing is completed by the IOC laboratory, the sending party can perform the "confirm completion" action on the official website, and the product will be included in the WPC official website. Enter the product ID number on the official website to query, and the tested product will be stored on the test bed.

According to WPC requirements, all test samples need to undergo compatibility testing with all previously certified samples. For example, if the tested product is a wireless charging transmitter, it needs to undergo compatibility testing with all WPC Qi certified receivers (including mobile phones). According to the Qi testing process, after passing the compliance test, the tested product needs to be sent for compatibility testing. If the compatibility test fails, the sample needs to be taken back for rectification. After the rectification is completed, it cannot be directly sent for compatibility testing, but needs to be retested for compliance and compatibility testing.

The cycle of QI certification

According to the normal testing time calculation, if there are no failed items for the tested product, it takes 4-5 weeks to pass all the testing items at once, plus some turnover time, so the general certification cycle is about 1.5-2 months.

According to WPC's data, taking November as an example during the peak certification period in 2017, nearly 30% of the tested products failed the first compatibility test, while the EPP test samples had a high first-time failure rate of 61.5%. Even with the now common BPP test, there is still a failure rate of nearly 20%.
