POPs is the abbreviation for the EU regulation on Persistent Organic Pollutants, which was developed by the EU to comply with the United Nations Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
POP substances refer to natural or artificially synthesized organic compounds that are highly toxic, difficult to degrade in the environment, bioaccumulate, capable of long-distance cross-border migration through air, water, and migratory species, and can deposit in areas far from their discharge sites. They can also accumulate in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, causing negative impacts on the environment and organisms. The EU introduced a new version of the POP regulation in 2019, commonly known as POPs 2.0.
