In order to improve the energy efficiency of electrical equipment and products in various industries, and to enhance significant economic and environmental benefits, Australia and New Zealand have issued the Greenhouse and Energy Low Standard Technical Regulations (GEMS), which came into effect on October 1, 2012. The new GEMS regulations replace the previous MEPS certification (Minimum Performance Standards).
In terms of MEPS registration, compared to the past, applicants are no longer able to choose any state to register on the Australian official website. Instead, they are required to register under the Australian Regulator. At the same time, in all states and jurisdictions of Australia, GEMS regulations no longer set a single registration fee for all product types. Product types will be divided into four categories, with registration fees ranging from AUD 440 to AUD 780 and a registration period of 5 years.

Applicable product scope
The products currently regulated by GEMS certification include:
Compact fluorescent lamps, ultra-low voltage converters, double ended fluorescent lamps, fluorescent lamp ballasts, incandescent lamps, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, external power sources, televisions, digital set-top boxes, electric water heaters, air conditioners and heat pumps, three-phase motors, household refrigeration appliances, refrigeration towers/precision air conditioners, commercial refrigerators, display cabinets, distribution transformers, etc.
Application Process
1. Select products for testing, based on standards consistent with the original MEPS certification. Generally speaking, any test report provided by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory can be recognized;
2. Submit test reports and other materials for GEMS registration. After the materials are reviewed and approved, the GEMS certification certificate will be obtained. The new GEMS regulations mainly have new requirements in terms of registration. Applicants cannot choose a single state for registration, but instead register under the Australian Regulator, and the registration period is 5 years depending on the product category.
