Introduction to RoHS Certification

The full name of the RoHS directive is "Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment". In 2002, the European Union first proposed the concept of RoHS - a directive to restrict the use of hazardous substances in electronic and electrical products (EEE).

Directive 2002/95/EC or RoHS: On July 21, 2011, the European Union restricted the use of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in the production process of certain electrical and electronic equipment sold within the European Union.

Directive 2011/65/EU or RoHS 2: On January 2, 2013, the European Union restricted lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (hexavalent chromium), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), toluene butyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (referred to as 4P)

In addition to the European Union, other countries and regions around the world, such as China, California, Singapore, India, the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, have also introduced RoHS control requirements, making RoHS the most basic access threshold for electronic and electrical products to enter the global market.

Testing items and regulatory requirements

The content in each homogeneous material shall not exceed the following limits:

Lead: limit of 1000ppm

Mercury: Limit of 1000ppm

Hexavalent chromium: limit of 1000ppm

Cadmium: limit value of 100ppm

Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB): limit of 1000ppm

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE): limit of 1000ppm

Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): limit 1000ppm

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): limit value 1000ppm

Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP): limit value 1000ppm

Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): 1000ppm

Applicable product scope

The RoHS directive covers a wide range of products, including almost all electronic and electrical products and their raw materials

Category 1- Large household appliances

Category 2- Small household appliances

Category 3- IT and Communication Equipment

Category 4- Consumer Devices

Class 5- Lighting Equipment

Class 6- Electronic and Electrical Tools

Category 7- Toys, leisure and sports equipment

Class 8- Medical Equipment

Class 9- Monitoring equipment including industrial monitoring and control instruments

Class 10- Vending Machines

Category 11- Other EEEs not included in the above categories

Application Process

1. Apply for ROHS testing and submit the application form;

2. Our company provides a quotation sheet;

3. Make payment according to the quotation agreement between both parties;

4. Send samples to our company by mail;

5. Arrangement of testing matters;

6. Data output, pass/fail;

7. Send the report to the applicant and the testing is completed.

Application materials

1. Only heavy metal testing is required: approximately 5-10g for solids and 5-10mL for liquids;

2. Only perform brominated flame retardant testing: approximately 10-20g of solid is required, and 10-20mL of liquid is required;

3. Conduct heavy metal organic pollutant testing: provide a sample of approximately 20-30g;

4. Perform other organic pollutant testing: provide approximately 30g of sample;

5. For samples that only test the coating area, the approximate weight of the material area of the coating should be indicated; If the weight of the plating (coating) area does not meet the requirements for sample delivery, plating (coating) raw materials need to be provided.

How much does RoHS testing cost?

RoHS testing is a very common chemical test and is relatively inexpensive RoHS testing is charged based on the material, with one material costing approximately 600 yuan, and the packaging price can be calculated for multiple materials.

How long is the validity period of RoHS report?

RoHS certification does not have a mandatory validity period. If the testing standards for RoHS certification are not officially revised, the original ROHS certificate can remain valid for a long time.

How long does it take to do RoHS testing?

The application for ROHS certification for common products takes about 5-7 days for regular products to undergo RoHS testing, provided that the customer provides samples and information.

Does RoHS certification require factory inspection?

RoHS does not require factory inspection.
