REACH, short for Regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals, is a chemical regulatory system established by the European Union and implemented on June 1, 2007. This is a regulation concerning the safety of chemical production, trade, and use, aimed at protecting human health and environmental safety, maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of the EU chemical industry, developing innovative capabilities for non-toxic and harmless compounds, preventing market fragmentation, increasing transparency in chemical use, promoting non animal experimentation, and pursuing sustainable social development. REACH establishes the concept that society should not introduce new materials, products, or technologies if their potential hazards are unknown.
