Basic Introduction

In September 2005, the German Food and Dietary Products Act LFGB replaced the Food and Daily Necessities Act LMBG(Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuches) 。 It is also known as the "Food, Tobacco Products, Cosmetics, and Other Daily Necessities Management Law" and is the most important basic legal document in Germany's food hygiene management. It is the guideline and core for the formulation of other specialized food hygiene laws and regulations. But in recent years, there have also been modifications, mainly to match European standards. The regulations provide general and fundamental provisions for all aspects of German food, and all food products and daily necessities related to food on the German market must comply with its basic regulations.

LFGB testing applies to all materials, including products produced using the latest technology, such as chrome plating on barbecue grills, temperature resistance testing of Teflon coating on cooking pans, and testing of silicone sealing rings in kettles. The commonly involved fields include ceramics, synthetic plastics, polyvinyl chloride, plasticizers, paper products, leather, textiles, cosmetics, tobacco, and so on The products involved include: toasters, sandwich ovens, electric kettles, and other electrical products that come into contact with food; Food storage supplies; Strengthen kitchen utensils such as glass cutting boards and stainless steel pots; Bowl, knife and fork, spoon, cup and plate tableware; Clothing, bedding, towels, wigs, false eyelashes, hats, diapers and other hygiene products, sleeping bags, shoes, gloves, watch straps, handbags, wallets/purses, briefcases, chair wrapping materials; Textile or leather toys and toys containing textile or leather clothing; Directly used yarns and fabrics; Various cosmetics and tobacco products, etc.

Test project

In general, Articles 30 and 31 of the LFGB German Food and Daily Necessities Act include the following testing items:

1. Initial inspection of samples and materials

2. Sensory evaluation of odor and flavor transfer

3. Plastic samples: transferable component testing and heavy metal precipitation testing

4. Metals: Composition and testing of heavy metals that can precipitate

5. Silicone resin: transferable or volatile organic compound testing

6. Special materials: tested for chemical hazards according to the German Chemical Act

Other testing items included in the regulations include:

1. Testing of certain azo dyes used in daily necessities such as textiles, leather, polyester fibers, etc.

2. Testing for harmful chemicals and heavy metals in cosmetics

3. Testing of harmful substances in tobacco

The process of LFGB certification

1. Consultation - The applicant provides product information and samples

2. Quotation - Based on the samples provided by the applicant, the technical engineer will evaluate and determine the items that need to be tested, and provide a quotation to the applicant

3. The applicant accepts the quotation

4. Sign the contract

5. Sample testing - Testing will be conducted in accordance with applicable standards

6. Produce a testing report

7. Issue a certificate of conformity that complies with LFGB testing

Important changes in the new regulations:

-In German law, implement EU Directive No. 178/2002 (Food Safety Requirements, Responsibilities of Food and Catering Operators)

-Tobacco will be subject to temporary regulations outside the new LFGB scope

-Expansion of the prohibition on misleading statements regarding materials and goods in contact with food

-There have been no significant changes to the safety testing of materials and goods in contact with food
